Working on MakerKing has been a massive learning experience for me. This article is going to describe our path in analyzing what's wrong with the game's development and what are are going to do about it.

Mobs are not fun enough. We can make them look however we want visually, but gameplay-wise they are lacking. What can you do with mobs other than jump on their head? Not enough. To make mobs more fun and appealing to new players they need to play a bigger role in the core gameplay of the game. This means more mob parts that actually do stuff. Things like armor for mobs, make mobs able to carry specific blocks, new parts like springs that make them jump higher. There is a lot of possibilities and we need to consider the best ones to increase the potential of mobs to create unique levels. The concept of the mob maker has a massive potential, but it's not being fully exploited right now.

Core gameplay is not fun enough for casual players. Sure experienced players can have fun with frisbees and high level tech, but we need unique powerups which are fun to use in themselves. Shooter powerups that let you shoot at things and shoot at mobs. We want to make the game more than just a jump and run game and we think this is necessary to create appeal for the game. The level editing aspect of the game is unique and unmatched (other level editor games exists but don't necessarily have the same depth with the mob maker) but this aspect alone is not enough to sell a game. So we want a more fun core gameplay, something that will attract players even if they don't care about editing!

Yet, we already started working on the electrical update. This was a mistake, we shouldn't have started a new update without pondering on the best things to do next. We wanted electrical circuits for a long time, but those circuits are not going to fix the core problems with the game. What to do now, just cancel the electric update to work on powerups and mobs? This is quite tricky and we aren't sure yet, but I think we'll have to mix a bit of both. It might not be the electric update after all, more like the "a bit of everything" update. I'm looking forward to see how this is going to play out, but for now, I'm just going to get to work on what matters most!
